Registration of residence of an EU citizen

An EU citizen who intends to register their stay in Poland submits to the voivode competent for the place of their stay:

  • completed, in accordance with the instruction, the application form for registration of residence under pain of leaving the application unexamined; The rules for completing the application are presented in the next stage: "Completing the application".

  • a photocopy of a valid travel document or other document confirming their identity and citizenship, e.g., an ID card (at the same time they present the original to the person accepting the application for inspection – under pain of leaving the application unexamined);

  • a written statement of the date of last entry into Poland.

In addition, the EU citizen submits documents or written statements appropriate to confirm that they meet the conditions of residence, as required by law (clarification in the stage: Requirements).

If you have taken up a job, present:

  • a written statement of the employer or the entity entrusting the performance of work on the intention to entrust you with the performance of work or a certificate of performance of work, or a document constituting the basis for the performance of work, such as: an employment contract, a mandate contract;

If you are self-employed, present:

  • a written statement regarding entry in the National Court Register or the Central Register and Information on Business Activity or other evidence confirming that you are a self-employed person in Poland.

If you are studying or undergoing vocational training, present:

  • a certificate of the unit conducting studies on admission to studies or on the continuation of studies, or of the unit conducting vocational training on admission to such training,

  • a document confirming the coverage of health insurance or the right to use health care services on the basis of the Regulations on the coordination of social security systems or the possession of private health insurance,

  • a written statement that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself and your family members so as not to be a burden on social assistance, or proof of their possession (* as explained below).

If you are the spouse of a citizen of the Republic of Poland, present:

  • a document confirming the conclusion of marriage with a citizen of the Republic of Poland (i.e. a current copy of the marriage certificate issued no later than 3 months before the date of submitting the application),

  • a photocopy of the spouse's identity document (ID card or passport);

In other cases (e.g., if you are a pensioner) present:

  • a document confirming the coverage of health insurance or the right to use health care services on the basis of the Regulations on the coordination of social security systems or the possession of private health insurance,

  • proof that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself and your family members so as not to be a burden on social assistance (*as explained below).

In the event that you apply for registration of residence as a family member of an EU citizen, being an EU citizen yourself, present a copy of the certificate of registration of residence of the European Union citizen, issued to that family member with whom you are staying on the territory of Poland.

If you are their spouse, also present:

  • a document confirming the marriage (e.g., a current copy of the marriage certificate issued no earlier than 3 months before the date of submission of the application).

If you are their direct descendant (i.e., you are the child of that EU citizen or their stepchild, under the age of 21 or dependent on an EU citizen or their spouse), please also present:

  • a copy of the birth certificate and possibly other documents confirming your age and the existence of family ties (e.g., a parent's marriage certificate)

  • (In addition, also if you are over the age of 21) documents proving that you are dependent on a parent/stepmother or stepfather (e.g., a statement by a parent/stepmother or stepfather about being dependent).

If you are their direct ascendant (i.e., you are the parent of this EU citizen or his/her mother-in-law and you are dependent on them or dependent on their son-in-law/daughter-in-law), also present:

  • a document confirming the existence of family ties (i.e., the child's birth certificate and possibly the child's marriage certificate)

  • a document certifying that the EU citizen or their spouse is dependent.

If you are a direct ascendant of a minor citizen of the European Union:

  • a document confirming the actual care of the minor and a document certifying that the minor is dependent on you.

Remember!

  • Evidence of sufficient financial resources to support oneself and family members so as not to constitute a burden on social assistance may in particular be:

a certificate of the amount of the limit on the credit card issued by the bank that issued the credit card - issued no earlier than one month before the date of submitting the application for registration of residence;

a certificate of possession of cash in a bank or cooperative savings and credit union with its registered office in the territory of the Republic of Poland – issued not earlier than one month before the date of submitting the application for registration of residence;

a document confirming the award of a domestic or foreign scholarship;

certificate of employment and earnings – issued not earlier than one month before the date of submitting the application for registration of residence.

Remember!

  • The documents should be attached in the original or in a copy certified to be a true copy of the original by a notary public or the party's attorney who is an attorney-at-law or legal advisor. Certification of the compliance of the copy with the original may also be done by an authorized employee of the voivodeship office in the administration office, upon presentation of the original document;

  • Documents drawn up in a foreign language must be presented together with a sworn translation into Polish.   • documents closely related to each other should be presented jointly and remain valid on the date of presentation (copies of marital status records should be issued not earlier than 3 months before submitting the application).
